Week 31: What is important to you?
Our children have so many forces competing for their attention, trying to tell them what is important. TV, peer groups, movies, books, and other media are all strong teachers regarding values. No matter how strong these cultural forces may be, families and teachers still have a vital role in helping to instill strong values in our kids. They are watching to see how we handle daily life and are making conclusions about what we think is important. If we want our children to be discerning in deciding what is important to them, we can notice what they say and do and use words to describe what we see:
“I noticed that you wrote nice cards to your brother and sister. It seems like family is important to you.”
“You spent a long time working on this project. I can tell that working hard and doing your best is important to you.”
“I saw you sharing your special paints with the kids at your table. Being kind is important to you.”
When faced with a variety of situations this week, the Puppet Pals discover what is really important to them like being:
- a good sport
- honest
- generous
- trustworthy
- responsible
- industrious
- cooperative
As children see these scenarios unfold and discuss the following questions, they can think about what values are important to them and hear what is important to others.
