Week 32: DEALING WITH DISAPPOINTMENTS –
Whether it is a drawing that didn’t turn out the way they hoped, a game that was canceled due to rain or an emergency that disrupts a plan, children are going to face disappointments in their life. While we would love to come in and try to fix the problem, that is not always feasible or even helpful. When kids learn that they can handle the big emotions that come with a letdown, they are able to build their resilience in preparation for inevitable future setbacks. Learning to deal with disappointment is part of their emotional development.
This week the Puppet Kids face a variety of disappointments and they learn to first calm down, then label their feelings and say what they wish had happened. Next, they are able to reframe the situation by answering one of the following questions:
- What is something good in this situation?
- What can I learn from this situation?
- What can I do instead?
- How can this be an opportunity to be creative?
As your kids watch these videos, they can think of ways they have handled disappointments in the past and imagine ways to approach future disappointments with resilience.
