RELATIONSHIP SKILLS: POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS –
“I can’t do it.”
“This is too hard.”
“I’m not good enough.”
“I quit.”
When faced with a new experience, a difficult task or an overwhelming situation, children can often resort to negative thoughts like these. One way to help them move into a different mindset is by giving them positive affirmations like these:
“You can do this!”
“You can do hard things!”
“You are smart!”
“You don’t give up.”
Being reminded of these truths will help to increase a child’s confidence, build their resilience and contribute to healthy self-esteem.
As children develop their social awareness, they discover that others are motivated by words of encouragement too. When they offer kind words that build others up, it is a win/win for both the recipient and the giver.
