When a child is having a hard time completing a task, it helps to give them some tools to pinpoint what is getting in the way. A variety of internal and external factors can contribute to their struggles such as:
- Motivation level
- Uncomfortable emotions
- Difficulty blocking out distractions
- Troubles with organization
Once we can recognize what is getting in the way, then we can come up with appropriate solutions such as:
- Providing incentives
- Practicing calming strategies
- Providing an environment with minimal distractions
- Breaking tasks into smaller manageable steps
This week the Puppet Pals have difficulties doing a variety of activities. They learn to Pay Attention to things going on inside themselves, such as their motivation level and emotions as well as outside factors like distractions in their surroundings or following the steps of the task. Acknowledging the source of their troubles helps them to brainstorm appropriate solutions.
As you watch these videos with your children, you can help them make connections to their own lives. They will likely still need your guidance in applying these principles in similar situations, but this is a good introduction. Kids can then experience that sense of satisfaction that comes with overcoming a hurdle.
This week of lessons includes four scenario videos that you can watch with your students Monday through Thursday with follow-up questions for class discussions. Kids can watch Inspector Clue So-So on Friday as he tries to help the Puppet Pals look for clues to solve problems.
This week also includes a Simple Summary video in Spanish for those who are developing simple language skills, while focusing on the target social-emotional skill of the week.
